Why Do Babies Put Everything In Their Mouth?
“Is my baby teething?” is one of the most frequent questions I get asked when a baby is 4-months old. Most often, the answer is no.
Babies learn about their world by exploring it with their senses. They’re born with ready-to-use skills which include mouthing everything they can manage to get into their mouth.
Babies Explore The World With Their Mouth
The mouth is sensitive and helps a baby understand her world. Around 6-months of age, a baby’s oral muscles strengthen and so does her motor skills. She can now easily get things into her mouth and explore them---including her toes.
Is She Teething?
Teething typically begins somewhere between 4 - 7 months and a baby will put everything within reach in her mouth in an attempt to ease teething discomfort. But realistically, I wouldn’t assume mouthing is due to teething unless you see a tooth poking through.
