Why do toddlers ask WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY?

Kids want answers and they want to understand. They also want to engage with you but they don’t have very sophisticated communication skills.

Toddlers just want to understand.

‘Asking why, why, why, why?’ is not a child’s attempt to annoy you (although it probably will!) ⁣ And while it can be crazy-making trying to answer all the questions, try and remember that answering them boosts brainpower.⁣

Asking ‘why’ can also be a push for your attention. Sometimes it’s best just to stop what you’re doing, squat down so your little one knows you’re 100% in, make eye contact, and have a little chat or moment together. ⁣

“Why” can also come out of defiance. This is another conversation but till then, even though it can be really frustrating, I’d just give a quick honest answer. ⁣

Remind yourself that your child often either wants to understand the world or wants to connect with you—two great goals. ⁣
