Let Me Introduce You to Sammy

Sammy was 18-months old when his mom came to my office for a consultation about his behavior.

His mom was convinced something had to be wrong with him because his tantrums were uncontrollable, frequent and wild.

For example, if mom told Sammy he couldn’t have pancakes for breakfast, his reaction started off with tears. Then it would escalate into screaming and him rolling on the floor, sometimes for over an hour.

And this was just one of many examples of Sammy’s “out of control” behavior.

I asked a lot of questions and discovered that Sammy was sent to his room whenever he had a tantrum. His mom would pick him up and carry him to his room and hold the door closed until he stopped crying.

These could go on for 5 minutes or 25 minutes.

After listening to mom and finding out more about little Sammy, I instructed Sammy’s parents on some simple changes they could make in the way they were calming him down and disciplining him.

I also spent some time explaining to them exactly what was going on in Sammy’s brain so they could better understand him and what he was going through.

We talked about tantrums being like a dance and each partner influenced the outcome.

While you can’t change your child, you can change your dance steps.

Although, to be perfectly honest, Sammy’s mom was resistant to some of my changes.

Because on the surface, connection-based parenting might make you feel like you’re being a pushover.

It almost feels counterintuitive.

But once Sammy’s mom followed the steps I gave them, it didn’t take long for tantrums to decrease. Even dad got on board after seeing how much less intense and chaotic the tantrums had become.

Sammy is just one of the thousands of children that I’ve helped using my E.A.S.Y. Parenting Framework found inside Toddlers Made Easy.
